Hello Marloes,

The immediate artefacts that spring to mind are the Early Saxon ivory purse rings, they are similar to your item but usually larger than the dimensions that you have given. If you have MacGregor’s “Bone, Antler, Ivory and Horn: The technology of skeletal materials since the Roman period” have a look at pages 110-112. The following pages also them have a few examples of bracelets as well.

Regards,

David

Subject: [Bonetools] Ivory ring

Dear all,

During excavations of a Roman villa in the Netherlands a pit has been excavated which contains metal weaponry from the late iron age. In this pit a fragment of an ivory ring or bracelet (?) has been found. It has an estimated diameter of 8 cm, the thickness is 5,8 x 6,7 mm.

Does anyone know of any parallels or references or anything else? Early medieval examples are welcome too.

Best wishes,

Marloes
