Marit Gaimster has passed on to me details of this ivory comb from a recent excavation in 
London. 
It was found in a context with medieval material but is likely to be a little later in 
date. At 

first sight it is an ordinary comb, for which the teeth are now missing. However, a series of 

evenly–spaced holes have been drilled into it and the end has been modified. Is this a case of a 

comb being adapted for a secondary use, possibly as a winder for thread ? Or did it have some 
other 

(secondary) function ?
