Marit Gaimster has passed on to me details of this ivory comb from a recent excavation in
London.
It was found in a context with medieval material but is likely to be a little later in
date. At
first sight it is an ordinary comb, for which the teeth are now missing. However, a series of
evenly–spaced holes have been drilled into it and the end has been modified. Is this a case of a
comb being adapted for a secondary use, possibly as a winder for thread ? Or did it have some
other
(secondary) function ?
