Dear Gunther,

It might be a chess piece, although the decoration would be very unusual for that purpose (if not unique). It could also be a playing piece for a different game. Here is a pdf of a 1995 text that I wrote about the English series of chess pieces, for anybody who is vaguely interested in this sort of thing,
