Dear Benedicte, Marta, Etan, Christian, Nejma and Sabine,

Thank you very much for your help and all your ideas! I will look into (furniture) mounts of this period.

Thanks again,

Marloes

There are very similar traces specifically on furniture mounts from earlier periods, especially in Late Roman times, in the Mediterranean area (I've seen them on objects in the South of France as in Jordan). They were, as Christian and Nejma said, very likely used to increase the adhesion of the bone on another surface. It is probable that these marks were used in the same way later on. I agree with Ethan, it is likely to be mounts.

Kind regards,
Bénédicte

The Marta's objects are very similar, and especially what is most striking is the resemblance of the technical traces on the underside. And I totally agree with Christian on the assumption that the rough surface may be useful for the better application and hafting of glue.

In this regard, there are some very interesting work (in French) by R. Deffarges, P. Lawrence D. of Sonneville-Bordes (1977), as well Rigaud and J. Allain (1986, 1989). This work concerns Paleolithic objects, but the idea is the same. A. Rigaud and J. Allain have shown that the striations made on the bevels of Magdalenian points were very effective in hafting of these points. Even with a slight striation, the resistance to dislocation passes between 40 and 45 kg after adding glue (Allain and Rigaud, 1989, p. 221-222).

Obviously the mechanical "stress" involved in the function of projectile points is very different, but the principle remains the same: increase the adhesion.
Best,

Nejma

and if so, the rough undersurface may be useful for the better application and hafting of glue...

Just an idea...

Dear Marloes,

I have found some similar pieces from the late medieval Hungarian capital (Buda castle, see attached photos) and I suppose to be a type of bordure (for example furniture, or box etc.).

Best regards,

Marta

Marloes.
May it be raw material to cover chembalo claviature keys or perhaps to make domino peaces. They were often made as a sandwich of one layer of bone and one layer of ebony fastened together with a tiny ravet.

Another mystery bone object.

Any ideas or parallells for this 17th/18th century object??

With best wishes,

Marloes
