Dear Benedicte, Marta, Etan, Christian, Nejma and Sabine,

Thank you very much for your help and all your ideas! I will look into (furniture) mounts of this period.

Thanks again,
They were, as Christian and Nejma said, very likely used to increase the adhesion of the bone on another surface. It is probable that these marks were used in the same way later on. I agree with Ethan, it is likely to be mounts.

Kind regards,
Bénédicte

And I totally agree with Christian on the assumption that the rough surface may be useful for the better application and hafting of glue.

In this regard, there are some very interesting work (in French) by R. Deffarges, P. Lawrence D. of Sonneville-Bordes (1977), as well Rigaud and J. Allain (1986, 1989). This work concerns Paleolithic objects, but the idea is the same. A. Rigaud and J. Allain have shown that the striations made on the bevels of Magdalenian points were very effective in hafting of these points. Even with a slight striation, the resistance to dislocation passes between 40 and 45 kg after adding glue (Allain and Rigaud, 1989, p. 221-222).

Obviously the mechanical "stress" involved in the function of projectile points is very different, but the principle remains the same: increase the adhesion.
Best,

Nejma
