My answer to Beverly was:

I have seen many brushes and toothbrushes excavated or in museums in the Netherlands. Sometimes the types are small like these; sometimes double-sides as well. One could wonder about the function or the reason for such a small brushes (for children perhaps?). The small brushes I have seen, often have a earscoop or toothpick at the other end.
The grooves on the backside are holding the metal (copper?) threads which hold the hairs in place.

Best, Marloes

Dear Etan,
But if you add on what is missing from the brushy parts it would be longer - maybe it is a mustache brush - just joking. However - what does Marloes say - she has seen the greatest vaiety of wierd Early Modern Age objects made from bone.

Dear Bly,
Are you sure about the length you gave for this bone object (1.5 inches = 3.75 cm)? It seems rather small and probably uneasy to use as a toothbrush...

Does anyone have an idea what this object may be? It is 1.5 inches in length and was found on a late 17th-century site in South Carolina, USA.
