Hi Dimitris thank you for your comments. As you The key advantage of SVC is to be able to support High Resolution video and audio in point to point and multipoint calls over shared network. In addition to the coding and transport, another aspect to make sure quality is good is the Endpoint, our experience is that using a Logitech 9000 makes a dramatic improvement, same for the USB Mic. The most important is clearly the USB Mic or headset. The problem is the way Windows is managing audio card drivers, It does a much better job on the USB side. So if you have a Pentium PC keep the CIF camera, if you have a core2duo, it is much better to get a VGA camera, but in both cases it is critical to get a USB mic or headset.
Some examples of products that we tested and works very well:
Logitech USB Headset: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/webcam_communications/internet_headsets_phones/devices/3621&cl=roeu,en
Logitech Quickcam 9000: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/webcam_communications/webcams/devices/3056&cl=roeu,en
ClearOne chat 50 USB Mic: http://www.clearone.com/products/product.php?cat=9&prod=94
Thanks
Eric

Is there a list of recommended/tested webcams?

I may be able to find a USB mic+headset.
These last two items are the ones that may proove problematic with most any
enduser community, because they are not "typical", at least not yet.
If the consequencies of not using a 30fps/HD webcam are just a lower picture
quality transmitted from my side, this is probably acceptable.
What are the consequences of not using a USB mic-headset and relying on a
typical PC soundcard for sound input+output?
Many of our endusers will be in those shoes.

Of course I agree with the format of the meetings and I am looking forward to
seeing the progress since our last tests. The gateway to legacy endpoints would
be very interesting to our group, as you already know and we are hoping it will
be added soon to SURFNet's setup.
Cheers.
