COLLECTING & DISPLAY 100BC to AD1700

CALL FOR PAPERS

Women Collectors,

Institute of Historical Research, 8 to 9 July 2008

Call for Papers:

The history of collecting is becoming an important field of cultural
history, attracting specialists from an increasingly wide range of
disciplines. However, looking at the most famous collectors through the
centuries, one might easily be excused for thinking of collecting as an
almost entirely male pastime. Julius Caesar and Augustus, Abbot Suger,
Lorenzo il Magnifico, Thomas Coke Earl of Leicester, to mention just a few
examples, come to mind far more readily than the names of female collectors.
There were and are, however, women who amassed and left behind large
quantities of collectibles. Much research still remains to be done in order
to explore these collections beyond the work already done on Isabella
d’Este, Bess of Hardwick, and Alatheia Countess of Arundel.

This conference means to focus on Women Collectors and their
possessions, whether artworks, antiquities, plants, or books. Were their
collections different from their male counterparts and were there
distinctions between collections of husband and wife? What category of
objects interested female collectors and were these less attractive to male
collectors? Was it necessary for them to target the pieces they desired in a
different way? What kind of access to the (international) art market did
women have and what was their purchasing power? We are interested in papers
that concentrate on less well-known female collectors through the ages in
Europe and beyond. Please send your proposal of 250 words to
agaldy at hotmail.com before 30 November 2007.

The Venue:

The conference will be held at the Institute of Historical Research,
University of London, which also hosts our research seminar during term
time. Nearest tube stops are Russell Square, Goodge Street, and Tottenham
Court Road. Nearby train stations are King’s Cross and Euston. Delegates are
required to make their own arrangements for accommodation. Please also make
your own travel arrangements to and from London. The conference is timed
just before the Society for Renaissance Studies conference in Dublin to
facilitate travel for delegates wishing to attend both events.
