Media Development Fund Helps Developing Countries Spread
        the News

A recent article in the Industry Standard profiles the
Media Development Loan Fund (http://www.mdlf.cz/), a
New York City-based foundation that assists independent
  news organizations in developing democracies.

With support from a number of large U.S. foundations,
  including the MacArthur Foundation
  (http://www.macfound.org/index.htm), the Charles Stewart
Mott Foundation (http://www.mott.org/), and the Open
  Society Institute (http://www.soros.org/), MDLF provides
low-interest loans to newspapers, magazines, radio and
television broadcasters, and Internet-based media concerns
in developing countries and trains them in the use of
different technologies to ensure the free and sustainable
  distribution of their news.

According to MDLF founder Sada Vucinic, the organization
also works to train independent news organizations in the
business of journalism. "Only when a media company is
capable of sustaining and developing its activities with
its own revenues," says Vucinic, "can it be free of
  outside influences and truly independent."

Since its creation four years ago, the Fund has loaned
more than $12 million to organizations in approximately 30
countries. And while only $2 million of that amount has
been repaid, MDLF's impact on media in developing
countries appears to be paying off. As Vucinic told the
Standard, "We are committed to having our loans repaid,
and we don't hesitate to be tough. But we are also
committed to ensuring the success of our borrowers."
