INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH
GRANTS
Description and Application
Procedures
Description: International Collaborative Research grants for amounts up
to $30,000 are available to assist anthropological
research projects undertaken jointly by two (or more) investigators from
different countries. These grants are renewable for a
second period of research. The purpose of the program is to encourage
collaborations in which the principal investigators bring
different and complementary perspectives, knowledge, and/or skills.
Priority is given to those projects involving at least one
principal investigator from outside North America and Western Europe,
but other international collaborations will be
considered. Both investigators must meet the qualification for Regular
Grants (i.e., holding the doctorate or equivalent in
anthropology or a related discipline).
Grants are awarded to cover expenses of a specific research project.
Applications are evaluated by two main criteria: the
quality of the proposed research, and the potential benefits of the
collaboration for international anthropology. Projects primarily
for purposes other than research, such as training, education, or
writing, are not eligible for this program, although such goals
might well be served within the scope of a research project.
Budgetary Guidelines: Grants cover research expenses directly related
and essential to the project (i.e., travel, living
expenses during fieldwork, equipment, supplies, research assistance,
expenses of communication between the investigators, and
other relevant expenditures). Aid is not provided for salary and/or
fringe benefits of applicants, tuition, non-project personnel,
institutional overhead, or institutional support.
Application Information: Inquiries should be made by means of a
preliminary statement, which should briefly cover the
following points: 1) names of investigators, their institutions, and
biographical data; 2) topic, aims and scope of the research
project; 3) what each investigator would bring to the collaboration; 4)
proposed schedule of research; 5) proposed budget. If a
project is considered eligible for this program, formal application
materials will be sent.
Deadline: There is no fixed deadline. Preliminary statements will be
reviewed as they are received. Candidates who are invited
to submit a formal application will be notified of the decision within
six months after receipt of the completed application.
