Dear Working Group Members,
Many of you have very generously sent suggestions regarding resources for
the Working Group. For messages that are solely providing resources, we
will compile them and distribute them to the Working Group once a week. We
are grateful to members who have provided these resources and trust that
they will be useful in your efforts to end violence against women.
Thanks again for all your outstanding contributions!
Best regards,
The Moderators

**** UPCOMING CONFERENCES ****
I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of an upcoming
conference, "Women, Culture, and Development Practices" to be held Nov.
12-14, 1998, at the French Senate in Paris, France. This conference is
organized by the American University of Paris, in conjunction with the
French Senate and UNESCO. This conference will focus on women's success
stories in both development theory and practice. Experts from all over
the world will
explore new development paradigms, particularly those that have shaped
and improved women's lives since the 1995 U.N. Conference on Women in
Beijing. The conference aims to redefine development in a broad,
interdisciplinary sense, bringing in narratives from politics,
economics, literature, the arts, medicine, law and education. Far too
often, development becomes the dry, sterile domain of statistics and
loses its resonance as a measure of human cooperation and progress. We
hope to provide a lively, midway platform between Beijing and the next
U.N. Conference on Women, and to encourage our participants to create
new intellectual tools with which to investigate the varied spectrum of
women's development practices worldwide. The gender and development field
is at a turning point and this conference presents a unique opportunity
for participants to influence the international debate.
Some speakers will directly address the subject of violence against women,
including topics such as: Female Genital Mutilation, Women and War Zones, and
Law and Society. In relation to the conference as a whole, women and
development can be considered important to the international debate of
violence against women: there are direct links between the economic,
political, and social status of women in societies and the frequency of
incidents of violence against them.
If you would like to attend this conference, or would like more
information, please contact Kristen Lundin at <KrisE15 at aol.com>.
