cordially invite you to their conference

Construction and Reconstruction
Women, Family and Politics in Central Europe
(1945-1998)

on 3 and 4 December, 1998
at the Goethe-Institut Budapest
1061 Budapest, Andrassy ut 24.
Working language: German and English

The conference seeks to bridge history and contemporary politics. It
takes advantage of the Central European network of organizing
institutions, and seeks to bring together those specialists who are
researching women in politics and in the family. The conference
thematizes those problems which are burning issues for present policy
makers and tries to analyse the roots of the problems in a historical
perspective.

The first day deals with the issue of women's under-representation in
politics. The first panel seeks to explore the emotional patterns of
those women who joined political movements dominated by men.

The second panel is dedicated to the role of women in the
reconstruction period and the transformation of matriarchy born in
need, with a special attention to legislative processes and women in
political parties. The lectures give examples of the "nationalisation"
of women's movements and the creation of autonomous women's movements
as an element of social movements in Austria and Hungary.

The second day explores the different meanings of the "family".
"Representing family" for instance in popular Austrian televison
series of the sixties and in contemporary Hungarian soap operas, the
family in the political discourse of the eighties and politicizing the
family in media constitute the focus of the first panel of the second
conference day.

The second panel, "The Family as Reality" finally deals with the
different aspects of changes in the legal approaches and social
realities towards the family since 1975 in Austria (Broda's
Familienrechtsreform) and in Hungary since 1989, and in Serbia during
the present war.
