Dear Alice – many thanks for your response!
I looked at this object with our animal bone specialist and we both agreed it is ivory rather than bone. But I will look at it carefully again. Still waiting for the go-ahead and further information on the site before I can write it up – and desperate for any parallels!
I would be more than happy to submit this for the WBRG website once I have a fuller picture of this. It really is an amazing object, and the image looks so familiar.
Best wishes from Marit

Dear Marit,
You certainly got it right!!! My first guess would be scabbard sheath mounts but this is not my area of specialty. Why do you say it is ivory - it is not immediately apparent from the image.
Best,
Alice
PS Would you be willing to submit this piece (once you decide what it is) to the 'bone tool of the month' category on the WBRG website (WBRG.net) ? It really is a spectacular find.

Dear Worked Bone Research Group members,
I hope I am doing this right!
Attached is a photograph of a beautifully carved object of ivory from an excavation at Great Dunmow in Essex.
It looks so familiar but I just can’t put my finger on any immediate parallels. The nearest I can think of are a knife or daggard scabbard sheath mounts and it is likely medieval. The two pieces likely forming the back and front? As you can see from the fragment to the left in the picture, there is a small iron rivet for fixing; the piece forms the edge of the widest part of the object and refits the piece just to its right. The most complete side/example measures c 60mm in length.
Any further information, suggestions and/or examples would be wonderful.
With best regards from Marit Gaimster
