I have taken the liberty of forwarding this letter about Roman antler
working in Northern France. I am sure we have many experts who can respond
to his inquiries. You should reply directly to Tarek and the WBRG list so
we can all see your responses.
Best,
Alice

Subject: [ZOOARCH] Imported Late Roman bracelets and necklaces made of
ANTLER
To: <ZOOARCH at jiscmail.ac.uk>
Dear colleagues,
A would like to enquire about unusual ornaments made of antler. These
elements appear on *late Roman sites in northern France* (attached are
photos of an example form The Authie estuary on the shore of the channel.
In some instances, we find the copper alloy that was used to keep together
the successive *bracelet/Necklace elements*.
We matched these finds with productions studied and published by Sabine
Deschler-Erb 2005 from an antler *workshop in Eastern Switzerland* (Figure
8&9 p.210).
*Deschler-Erb, S. (2005). Borderline production: A late Roman antler
workshop in Eastern Switzerland. In From Hooves to Horns, from Mollusc to
Mammoth. Manufacture and Use of Bone Artefacts from Prehistoric Times to
the Present. Proceedings of the 4th Meeting of the ICAZ Worked Bone
Research Group at Tallinn, 26th - 31th of August 2003., Muinasaja Teadus15
Tallinn*
It seems that these objects travel with people from the eastern Europe and
are associated with evidence of the presence of Germanic populations in
late-Roman France (Sr isotopes on Human bones + imported artefacts).
My request is:
- to share your experience of this type of objects.
- to know of any other bone/antler elements that could have traveled
westwards in late Roman period and in particular *penknives *(folding
knives with solid bone/antler handles)
- access a pdf version of the paper of Biro 2000 of a larger scale workshop
that has produced this type of elements cited by Sabine Deschler Erb 2005

Rom. Auseinandersetzung - Anerkennung- Anpassung. Spisy Archeologickeho

Many thanks for any comment or help with this question that could help me
get on the right path to put together a paper on these special finds.
Best wishes,
Tarek
