Hello again Marloes,

Thanks for that. Van Vilsteren's ideas were sometimes a little 'left field', particularly in the
1987 book (!). But still interesting, all the same.

The Wharram reference is:

Bone, Antler and Ivory Objects, in C. Harding, E. Marlow-Mann and S. Wrathmell, The Post-Medieval
Farm and Vicarage Sites, Wharram. A Study of Settlement on the Yorkshire Wolds 12, York University
Archaeological Publications 14, York, 275-286

All the bone knives that I have seen have been full-size, and I haven't seen any miniature
examples,

Ian Riddler

Dear Ian,

Thanks very much for this!

The 'butter knives' however (interpreted by Van Vilsteren as feather curlers) are much larger than
this miniature knife (which is not suitable for real use).

Best wishes, Marloes

Hello Marloes,

I have published some full-sized early Anglo-Saxon bone knives recently but the more relevant texts
relate to the post-medieval period. There is a bone knife in the enclosed text on the post-medieval
objects from Wharram Percy, and that refers to the work of van Vilsteren, and particularly his
intriguing text on Dutch bone butter knives:

van Vilsteren, V. T., 1987
Het Benen Tijdperk. Gebruiksvoorwerpen van been, gewei, hoorn en ivoor 10,000 jaar gelden tot
heden, Drents Museum

van Vilsteren, V. T., 1988
De botte benen botermesjes, Westerheem 37, 213-21

Thus a miniature knife might in fact be a bone butter knife !

Objet: [Bonetools] miniature knife

Dear all,

This miniature knife made of bone has been recovered from a child's grave in a chapel of a
monastery and is dated between 1470 and 1572 AD.

Does anyone know of any parallells or has seen similar finds of miniature objects as grave goods?
Or perhaps any other suggestions/literature?

Thanks,

Marloes
