Yes, Prof. Poplin. It's very common in ancient combs that while sawing the teeth with the saw held obliquely, it left similar cuts on the side plates as well. It proves, of course, that in this fine comb from Italy the teeth were sawn after the central plaque was attached between the two side ones.
I would also guess that the comb was longer with a third metal pin in place.

That kind of object is usually, basically made of antler, as it seems here (but I don't like to give advices on photographs). I'll search bibliography soon. And the main reason for me to answer is provided by the attacks of the saws (they where two) on the supplementary bar. I'll tell you that very reason. It deals with a certain link between the teeth of the saw and the teeth of the comb.

Dear all,
I am currently studying the bone assemblage recovered from the Duomo of Padova (Italy) dated to the early and high Middle Ages. An Italian student is working with the worked bone material, among which there is this comb (see attached photographs) that comes from the cleaning layer. First of all, I would like to ask for your expertise in order to identify the material it is made of and secondly, I would appreciate very much any comments you would like to make on its typology. If you send some bibliography we can read, it would be great!
Best regards,
Marta
