Hello Helena,
This is a fascinating assemblage of worked bone and the association with wood as well is very
unusual and intriguing. Within England the closest thing that we have are what we regard as bone
rings, mostly from 11th and 12th century contexts, and here is a text on those. It should be
published later this year as a small part of a PCA monograph on excavations in Chichester, Sussex.
In contexts of roughly the same date in Ireland there are numerous examples of bone cylinders,
mostly cut from cattle metapodia, and they have been found in Scotland as well. They are much
longer objects though, often with distinctive wear patterns on the inner bone channel. There are
lots of different ideas as to their precise purpose. I can send along details of those as well, if
it helps,
Ian Riddler

>Hi,

>My name is Helena Rosengren and I'm working as an antiquarian at the Swedish History Museum in
Stockholm. I got this email address from my colleague Johnny Karlsson, who is a member of the bone
tools group. I wish to attend this mailing list for a specific issue; I have found some mysterious
bone objects in one of the medieval materials from Söderköping, Sweden. I have posted this issue on
our blog (http://stadsarkeologi.historiska.se/2016/02/12/besynnerliga-benforemal-vad-ar-detta/ but
I would be very grateful if this could be shared within this group.
