[Bonetools] weaving spools from perforated sheep metapodials

Hello Alice,

I published several from Late Saxon (10th to 11th century) contexts at West Fen near Ely a few years ago: text enclosed here. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that they are spools though. Taylor and May’s 1996 text on the metapodia from Dragonby in Lincolnshire is one of the best texts for identifying the various types of bone modification, and is still widely used here.

Subject: [Bonetools] weaving spools from perforated sheep metapodials

Dear all,
I have just come across a reference to perforated sheep metacarpals used as spools from a medieval context. somewhere in Europe (I suspect northern Europe). Does anyone know anything about it or even better have images?

Alice
