[Bonetools] weaving spools from perforated sheep metapodials

Another idea springs to mind – Margrathe Hald in “Olddanske tekstiler” suggests that they could be used as bobbins for making a 4 strand braid (rather than shuttles as Ambrosiani mentions). We have tried it out and they do work for this. I will have to wait until later for the exact reference (the book is at home) but it is a further use for them.

Mmetapodial tools come in so many iterations it makes my head spin - still each new suggestion or ethnographic example helps tremendously - thank you.

  Hello Alice,

It is something I have seen suggested for Viking and later periods (see attached pages from “Viking age combs, comb making and comb makers in the light of finds from Birka and Ribe” by K Ambrosiani), but I am not sure how much actual “proof” there is of it from any source rather than just a theory. It is also mentioned that they could be net sinkers, and in the past I have found it suggested that they could be horse hobbles (apparently this has happened in Iceland until quite recently, see photo).

  Dear all,
I have just come across a reference to perforated sheep metacarpals used as spools from a medieval context. somewhere in Europe (I suspect northern Europe). Does anyone know anything about it or even better have images?
