suggests that they could be used as bobbins for making a 4 strand braid (rather
than shuttles as Ambrosiani mentions). We have tried it out and they do work for
this. I will have to wait until later for the exact reference (the book is at
home) but it is a further use for them. </DIV>

later periods (see attached pages from “Viking age combs, comb making and comb
makers in the light of finds from Birka and Ribe” by K Ambrosiani), but I am
not sure how much actual “proof” there is of it from any source rather than
just a theory. It is also mentioned that they could be net sinkers, and in the
past I have found it suggested that they could be horse hobbles (apparently
this has happened in Iceland until quite recently, see
