Hi,
I have just had a crossbow nut from London, which is fairly similar to
the Urquhart castle example. The London example is from a context dated
to the early 15th century. The following may also be of use and can be
found on Google Books: http://books.google.com

Payne Gallwey, R, 1903 (reprinted 2007) The Crossbow: its military and
sporting history, construction and use, Skyhorse Publishing, New York
All the best,
Jackie
