In Leroi-Gourhan's classification of technical gestures, "percussion
lancée" (thrown percussion) means that the tool is held in hand and
the active part is literally thrown at the material you want to work.
A hammer, an axe, a digging stick, a chopper are all used with
percussion lancée. Percussion lancée is opposed to percussion posée
(still percussion ?!), where the active part of the tool is in
constant contact with the material worked (percussion posée is
something like "pressure"). A scraper, a plane, a saw, a knife (when
used to cut, not to pierce) work with percussion posée.
