[Bonetools] Antler hook

I thought the group may like to see an elk antler used as a hook from a c.
1610 context of James Fort in Virginia – England’s first permanent
transatlantic colony, established 1607. You are looking at the hook from the
back, which has been flattened and two attachment holes drilled (one still
contains remnants of an iron nail). Good ideas continue forever!

It's a hook to hang bags and clothes, as Mongols has used it till 1990's in
their ger (tent). Also deer antler and same size.

Yours, Denis

Hello,

This antler object was found on a coastal site in Scotland and is dated
sometime from the Late Iron Age through to Late Norse. It appears unfinished
(or least rather rough) and the end of the hook has a drilled out hole
(possibly for a metal spike though there is no staining). As can be seen
from the pen in the photo, the hook is quite large (about 200mm long) and
certainly bigger than a “normal” fishing hook. Does anyone know of any
similar artefacts or have any suggestions regarding its purpose?

Regards

David Constantine
