Hi Pam,

The complete reference is fig 951 and pages 1995-1996 in "MacGregor, A., Mainman, A. & Rogers, N.S.H., 1999. Bone, Antler, Ivory and Horn from Anglo-Scandinavian and Medieval York. London, Published for the York Archaeological Trust by the Council for British Archaeology." (the York bone working fascicule 17/12). The dimensions for the piece are listed under the catalogue (p. 2043) as L88.9mm, W40.9mm, T9.1mm.

I am afraid I have not studied this piece personally, so I am only going on the details from the book and I cannot answer your other questions. The description in the fascicule was originally written by Dr Dominic Tweddle.

Regards,

David Constantine

Hi David
What's the scale on this drawing/antler?
There appear to be 3? openings into the antler at the base. One circular opening on the prox end which connects with cavity and 2nd oval opening, and a possible 3rd, irregular opening. What are their dimensions and the nature of the 3rd? Are there any other openings? How far does the proximal cavity extend? Are there wear marks at the two points? Elsewhere? Publication/refs?

cheers
Pam

  Hello Marloes,

Merry Christmas to you as well.

There is a piece of decorated antler from York that has been tentatively suggested as being a lucet but not convincingly, however almost the entire antler is decorated (see attached L001). It is dated to late 9th-early 10th C.

I tried working some antler that I pretty certain was from the late 19th C (a plaque mounted frontlet that had a little label with the date of the kill). It was rather flaky on the surface, but after soaking for a few days it was fine to work with once the loose surface had been rasped away. Suitability for different projects would depend on the article being made I think. The antler seemed to be more brittle than modern antler and I wouldn't have recommended it for anything where stress would be placed upon the finished item e.g. comb teeth.

  Best Wishes,

  David Constantine

  Dear list-members,

I hope everyone has had a nice christmas!

I have a few questions on antler and hope you can help me or share your opinion.

Does anyone know of examples of decorated antler from the medieval period (especially 10th-12th centuries, but other examples are welcome too). I don't mean worked antler, but a complete antler that has been decorated.

A second question, do you think it is possible to work antler that is 100 or 150 years old?

Thanks a lot and best wishes,

  Marloes
