[Bonetools] decorated antler

Hello Marloes,

Merry Christmas to you as well.

There is a piece of decorated antler from York that has been tentatively suggested as being a lucet but not convincingly, however almost the entire antler is decorated (see attached L001). It is dated to late 9th-early 10th C.

I tried working some antler that I pretty certain was from the late 19th C (a plaque mounted frontlet that had a little label with the date of the kill). It was rather flaky on the surface, but after soaking for a few days it was fine to work with once the loose surface had been rasped away. Suitability for different projects would depend on the article being made I think. The antler seemed to be more brittle than modern antler and I wouldn't have recommended it for anything where stress would be placed upon the finished item e.g. comb teeth.

Best Wishes,

David Constantine

Dear list-members,

I hope everyone has had a nice christmas!

I have a few questions on antler and hope you can help me or share your opinion.

Does anyone know of examples of decorated antler from the medieval period (especially 10th-12th centuries, but other examples are welcome too). I don't mean worked antler, but a complete antler that has been decorated.

A second question, do you think it is possible to work antler that is 100 or 150 years old?

Thanks a lot and best wishes,

Marloes
