[Bonetools] ottoman walrus ivory in Hungary : no surprise

Dear Erika,

 

I can confirm similar walrus ivory sword handles (Persian) in the
collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. 

 

I’m finally back at my desk after ICAZ Paris and it was wonderful to meet so
many of you at last.

Dear Erika Gal,

à propos your poster : it's not surprising for me to see walrus
ivory/ivories of that time and culture in your country : the ivory handle of
ottoman/turkish swords is regularly made of it. The first time I made that
determination was at Benaki Museum Athens 1978 (on a tenth year after
wedding trip), the more recent some years ago at Damascus. Inbetween, I have
seen  maybe more than a dozen of exemplars in differeznbt places, as
Alexandria for instance.

No - the working group meetings are all scheduled for the same time. It
hardly matters  since all the information I have to give will be published
in ICAZ and after four days of conference we will all be ready for Freddy
anyway.

Dear colleagues,
      This is just a heads up to say that there will be a one hour meeting
of the WBRG  at the Paris ICAZ: Friday, 27 August, 17:30 – 18:30 in -
Jussieu, amphi 45A

If there is something special you want to bring up or show there will be a
laptop and projector and you are all welcome. I intend to VERY briefly run
though the meetings we have had, talk about publications and the website and
then open up the floor to all of you who choose to come.
