Dear Marloes,
I must admit that thought also passed through my mind when I saw the
pieces. I now remember there was information about nails showing up in horns
on the Zooarch mailing list that was related to display of butchered cattle.
But a practical explanation revolving around everyday objects makes much
more sense for your femur caputs. Sthe same kind of unrefine object like you
lead filled phalange gaming pieces.
