Dear Marloes,
I have a AD 1st c. ivory comb from a woman's grave in Aquincum but
after that there are nice ivory combs from 14th-15th c. on in Hungary. The
ottomans also used ivory combs here. Istvan Kovats and I have just finished
an article on Late Medieval-Early Modern combs from Buda castle and
Visegrad.
The most famous false teeth in the United States are a complete set that
graced the mouth of our first president, George Washington (late 18th c.). I
just saw them up close and personal this Spring in Mount Vernon and they
look like instruments of torture. They came from Europe and featured a
mixture of human and animal teeth embedded in a metal structure.
Apparently they were very painful to use.
Best,
Alice
