Dear all,

Recently I am working on dentistry objects made of bone/ivory, together with curator of the Utrecht University Museum. We are working on an article on false teeth of bone/ivory right now, so I wanted to ask if anyone knows about false teeth from archaeological or museum collections or has any other information such as articles or otherwise. (The earliest false teeth in the Netherlands are dated to the 17th century.)

After that, I was planning to do research on tooth brushes. I am sure I will find a lot of information about this, which I ofcourse will share with you all. I would appreciate any information from you too. The thing I can say so far about tooth brushes is, that the earliest example in the Netherlands is from the 17th century (only one example). It could be that tooth brushes were introduced in Northwestern Europe as early as the 16th century, but I have to do the research before I have proof of that. Most tooth brushes from Amsterdam are dated in the 18th century though. I still have to analyse the hair from the tooth brushes.

Please look carefully for inscriptions on the tooth brushes. Tooth brushes found in the Netherlands often have inscriptions, which indicate where they were coming from: mostly from Paris. Do tooth brushes found in other countries have such inscriptions too?
Does anyone know if there is information on (tooth) brush manufacture in Paris (or elsewhere)? There suppose to exist tooth brushes factories in France and England from the end of the 18th century onwards. (I will look for factories in Holland)

Last, I am also looking for information on double sided ivory combs. Anyone?

All the best,

Marloes
(I am on vacation from 9-24 september)
