Dear Mr. Poplin, dear colleagues,
I wonder if this case could be considered an attempt to heal a dental caries by lead filling?
From what I could find out such practice became widespread at least since the Roman period to be replaced by amalgam only in the 19th century...
Best regards,
Petar Zidarov

Subject: [Bonetools] leader in leadeds bones... and teeth ?
Dear Alice Choyke, dear colleagues all over space and periods...,
as far as leaded bones - and teeth - are concerned, this is the mostsurprising case I have ever seen. I let prepare these pictures speciallyfor you these last days, after I have seen the bovine firstphalanges.
This bovine incisor was found in a burial (a kind of long barrow, fr.allée couverte) from the late neolithic, rather chalcolithic period. Therefore, it could be the leader (in time) of leaded bones andteeth,
BUT
this "allée couverte" at Guiry-en-Vexin, north from Paris, isknown to have been occupied, squattered by soldiers during World War One,and you know how much handy-men they can be. When I studied first thisimplement, jewel, puzzling artifact, some years ago,
29 POPLIN F., 1975- Observations sur l'allée couverte du bois Couturier à Guiry-en-Vexin (Val d'Oise), IV: étude de la faune.Gallia Préhistoire, 18, 2, 447-449.,
there were no hope for a Carbon dating. Now, it may be possible, andI am preparing such an attempt. That's the reason why I came back to thatfind some weeks ago.
Suggestions are welcome.
Other pictures in the next e-mail.
