Dear Alice,
There is a short review on these bone weaving implements (called rigid
heddle or heddle-frame) in Wild, J.P., Textile Manufacture in the Northern
Roman Provinces, Cambridge 1970, 74-75.
He knows one bone example from South Shields (p. 74, note 5., plate IXa),
one from Pompeii (p. 74, note 4. - without illustration or further
reference) and one bronze example from the late fourth century from
Pilismarót (p. 74, note 4.) which was published by Barkóczi L.,' Késõrómai
temetõ Pilismaróton' Folia Archaeologica 12(1960) p.113, 30.10 ábra,
XXIII.5. tábla. (Barkóczi identified the object as bronze "grate").
The best ethographic analogies can be found in Hoffmann, M., The
Warp-weighted Loom, Oslo 1974, 104-109.(with further references). There is a
very nice Lappish bone example (Fig. 51. ) which is similar to the roman
objects.
You can find both Wild's and Hoffmann's book at the library of our
University under the numbers A.17.6Wild1 and G.15.6Hoff1.
I hope these informations are useful, please tell me if you need any more
help.
Best wishes,
Dávid
