Hi Folks:
The Popular Culture Association in the South and the American Culture
Association in the South will be holding its annual conference in
Nashville, TN, Oct. 5-7, 2000. We invite proposals of 100-150 words on any
topic having to do with American or popular culture. These proposals are
due to the Program Chair by June 01, 2000. This year's program will
include sessions on "Science Fiction, Cyperpunk," "Theorizing Computer
Games," "Roadside Memorials," "Battered Women in/and Literature," "Flannery
O'Connor," "Writing Down the Walls: From Prohibition to Prescription,"
"Teaching Popular Culture," "The South in Film: From _Nashville_ to _The
Apostle_," "New Detectives," "Southern Remnants: Art and Architecture,"
"Country Music," "The Civil War," "Spirits and Spirited People: The Fiction
of Toni Morrison," "Photographing the South," "The Queer South," "State
Flags, States' Rights, and the NAACP," and "_Dawson's Creek_ and Adolescent
TV," "Sports South: Football and NASCAR," to name a few.
Papers are limited to a reading time of 20 minutes (approximately
3,000-3500 words), with three presenters to a session. If you're
interested in joining us, please let me know soon, especially if you are
interested in organizing a complete session on a favorite topic. PCAS/ACAS
boasts one of the friendliest and most supportive memberships in the South.
For graduate students, it's a fine arena for a first time presenter.
Further, we maintain a competition for the best student paper in American
or in pop culture, replete with a small monetary prize.
Interested? Come join us at the Sheraton Nashville Downtown in October.
If you would like more information about the conference, let me know and
I'll send you a flyer.
