FAQ
Can I hide the taskbar icon created by the Windows VNC Server?
No, not without changing and recompiling the source code. We feel that there
would be few legitimate uses of VNC where you would need to conceal its
operation. However, there might be occasions where you would not want the
user of the server machine to close the VNC server or to be able to adjust
the WinVNC settings, password, etc. Unless the user is logged in with
administrator privilages, there is no need to take an additional
preventative action to enforce this access control. If the user does have
administrator privilages, then these facilities can be disabled using the
DisableClose and DisableOptions settings, respectively. See the VNC Server
for Windows documentation for more details.

Can I prevent people shutting down the Windows VNC Server, or changing the
Windows VNC Server settings?
VNC Server 4.0 for Windows can be run either in Application Mode or Service
Mode. In Application Mode, the user runs their own copy and has full control
over the settings and can control the server and shut it down. In Service
Mode, only Administrators can configure or shut the service down, whether
via the VNC Server tray icon or via the Start Menu items. Additionally, the
Options and Close tray menu items can be greyed out by adding the
DisableOptions and DisableClose settings to the server, as described in the
VNC Server documentation.

      Other Options

In addition to the settings described above, the VNC server supports
several advanced options. These options can be set on the command-line or by
adding an appropriate value to the Windows registry. For User-Mode servers,
this value should be added under the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RealVNC\WinVNC4 key; for Service-Mode servers,
the appropriate key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\RealVNC\WinVNC4.
DisableClose=true/false Disable or enable the Close menu item in
the system tray menu. Note that this does not prevent users from shutting
down the WinVNC4 process using the Task Manager or the Service Control
Manager if they have sufficient access rights to do so.
DisableOptions=true/false Disable or enable the Options... menu
item in the system tray menu. Note that this does not prevent users from
changing the settings in the Windows registry if they have sufficient access
rights to do so.
DisplayDevice=<display> The display device to remote, or empty
to remote all displays. The format of display is \\.\<device>. For example,
\\.\display1.
RemapKeys=<mapping> Keyboard remapping. mapping is a
comma-separated string of character mappings, each of the form char->char or
char<>char, where char is a hexadecimal keysym. For example, to exchange the
" and @ symbols you would specify the following:
  RemapKeys=0x22<>0x40
For a full list of options, run winvnc4 -help.

      Other Settings

In addition to the settings described above, the VNC viewer supports
several advanced options. These options can be set either on the
command-line or by adding an appropriate value to the Windows registry under
the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RealVNC\VNCViewer4 key. For a full list of
options, run vncviewer -help.
