Dear Friends,
Here is the second circular. the hard copy will be following
shortly in the snail mail. The attached document (for those of you for
whom it works). The copy in the body of the letter is a bit odd looking
but I hope the essence comes through.

2nd Meeting of the Worked Bone Research Group
Budapest 31 August - 5 September 1999

CIRCULAR II

The Worked Bone Research Group decided to hold its next
conference in Budapest during the first week of September 1999. At
this stage of organization the following could be arranged:

Timetable

Arrival/registration: 31 August, Tuesday
Papers/discussions: 1, 2 and 4 September
Excursion: 3 September, Friday
Departure: 5 September, Sunday

Conference venue

The conference will be held at the resort of the Agricultural Ministry, in
a residential area in Buda. The management would provide very
reasonable housing in the form of 15 double rooms with two meals
(breakfast, lunch) for a price of ca. DM 45 or US$ 30 per head/day.
Most importantly, there is a lecture room within the building. Thus we
could spend most of the day together without having to move around
and inevitably disperse.
Participants in a previous meeting we organized here were
quite satisfied with this arrangement which also made the event
accessible to colleagues with limited funding.
For those who have difficulty with doubling up or would
prefer more formal accommodations, there is a small hotel 10 minutes
by foot from the conference venue for a price of ca. DM 130 (US$ 90)
per head with breakfast. This should be also an alternative to those
who will register after the 30 places have been filled. It should be
possible for people living away from the conference area to buy lunch
tickets separately.
At both places, payments in cash should be made directly to
the reception (the resort does not take cards at this point).

Meals

A modest, but smörgåsbord type breakfast, a warm lunch
(optionally vegetarian) and coffee break refreshments will be included
in the price of accommodation at the resort. We were asked to pre-sell
lunch tickets for the entire event to make planning of the daily meals
feasible. A supper on the night of arrival can be arranged separately.
It is possible to eat your evening meal at the resort. Previous
experience, however, has shown that after a workday it was a good
idea to either go to downtown (ca. 25 minutes by bus) or to one of the
three nearby restaurants.

Academic program

It seems that we will have enough papers for a three
workday conference with ten papers (20 minutes with 10 minutes
discussion) each day. To avoid parallel sessions, people beyond the 30
paper limit may be encouraged to present their work in a poster
session.
According to the basic principle of the working group, papers
from both archaeozoologists and archaeologists (prehistorians and
proto-historians) alike. One of the aims should be the multidisciplinary
discussion of problems between these sometimes different researchers.
For this reason I am going to try to mix chronological periods within
sessions.
The following topics have been proposed for sessions. Major
interest was expressed in all but IV (only one response). This may be a
topic for informal discussion.

I Procurement and Use of Raw Material
II Manufacturing Techniques
III Methodologies for Studying Manufacture and Use Wear
IV Problems of Studying Materials in the Field versus in the
Laboratory
V Reports on Specific Prehistoric Assemblages
VI Reports on Specific Proto-Historic Assemblages

Preliminary discussions with the Editor indicate that
Archaeopress (a.k.a. BAR) would be a good medium for publishing our
conference proceedings. For this purpose, however, it is indispensable
that everyone arrives with manuscripts prepared following the enclosed
guidelines (sent in the snail mail version of this circular).
Sending abstracts

Since I am doing most of the work and planning for the
conference on my own, I need something of a running head start for
preparing the conference materials. I would appreciate it if all of you
hoping to attend and also give papers provide me with a short abstract
of your paper by 31 March, 1999. The text should not exceed 250
words, with author’s name and title of paper/poster included. Simple
e-mails (message body) are preferred to attachments. Camera ready
hard copies printed with 10 pt Times New Roman letters (Author’s
name, title centered) are also acceptable. The receipt of e-mail
abstracts will be reconfirmed.
Social events

The Aquincum Museum has offered to host a reception on its
grounds which would also offer an opportunity to have a glimpse at the
Roman Period predecessor of Budapest, the first urban settlement in
the area.
Friday could be devoted to visiting the open-air museum in
Százhalombatta (ca. 30 km south of Budapest) featuring
reconstructions of Hungarian Bronze Age houses and an Iron Age
tumulus which has been opened to the public and nearby Bronze and
Iron Age earthworks. This would involve some expense in the form of
bus rent (depending on the number of participants). Lunch on that day
would be arranged during the trip individually (pre-paid lunch at the rest
house could be served in the evening).
A mid-conference day was chosen for two reasons:
excursions are important social/professional events, therefore
participation should be encouraged. It may also be more convenient to
avoid the weekend rush at the open-air museum.
An informal conference dinner could be organized either at
the rest house or one of several neighborhood restaurants if people are
interested.

Registration fee

Registration fee would cover e. g. mailing and copying costs,
non-occupied space in double room in the case of an odd number of
same gender participants etc. This sum will be most probably around
the price of a day’s accommodation (i.e. DM 45 or US$ 30). It fee will
be collected upon arrival.
Given the lack of external funding in Hungary at the moment
everyone will have to look for their own sources of funding for the
(hopefully affordable) meeting. I tried the Wenner-Gren Foundation but
they did not express interest in funding this kind of conference.
Naturally, I will also be glad to provide letters of support to anyone who
may need them.

For those on the electronic mailing list, please reconfirm the receipt of
this second circular!
