UNC GETS $4 MILLION TO EXPAND 'PUBLIC LIBRARY OF THE INTERNET'
The Red Hat Center donated $4 million to the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill's MetaLab, a public digital library that
processes over 1.5 million transactions each day.  The site also
has a new name: ibiblio (www.ibiblio.org).  Red Hat's Robert
Young, a well-known supporter of open-source software such as
Linux, believes ibiblio is vital for the sharing of information,
and not only because ibiblio has a significant archive of open
source software programs among its collections.  Young believes
ibiblio shows how "extending patents and copyright rules to the
satisfaction of Disney and Time Warner is not necessarily in the
interest of all of us as citizens."  Users can upload any
material that they want to share with a wider audience into
ibiblio's archives, says ibiblio director Paul Jones.  Jones
intends to use Red Hat's donation to expand the library's
collections and to support research fellowships.
