NEW AND DANGEROUS COMPUTER VIRUS PROMPTS SOFTWARE COMPANY WARNINGS
Antivirus software companies are warning computer users about
another e-mail virus similar to the Melissa virus. The virus,
called either "Worm.Explore.Zip" or "Trojan ExploreZip," destroys
virtually every file on a computer's hard drive. General
Electric, Microsoft, and Intel have already experienced the
virus, but did not reveal the amount of damage their computer
systems experienced. The "worm" virus, expected to affect
Microsoft's Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT Systems, sends
a response using the same subject line that the sender used and
encourages the recipient to look at the attached documents. Once
the files are downloaded, the virus attacks the system's files,
deleting nearly every file. Computer technicians note that thus
far, reports about the virus have ranged from lost data to
computer shutdowns. Antivirus software for the new virus is
available on Web sites, including www.antivirus.com,
www.symantec.com, and www.nai.com. (Wall Street Journal 06/11/99)
