SUCCESSES AND FAILURES OF DIGITAL LIBRARIES

The 35th Annual GSLIS Clinic
(formerly known as the Data Processing Clinic)

March 22-24, 1998

http://edfu/lis.uiuc.edu/dpc98/

Sponsored by the Graduate School of Library and Information Science
                 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Sponsored by the Graduate School of Library & Information Science
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Clinic Co-Chairs: Michael Twidale, Associate Professor, Graduate School of
Library & Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign;
Susan Harum, External Relations Coordinator, Digital Library Initiative,
Grainger Engineering Library Information Center, University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign.

The 4-year NSF/ARPA/NASA-funded Digital Libraries Initiative (DLI) is
entering its final year. Now is a good time to look back on the successes
and failures of the development process. We hope to provide valuable
insights for those wanting to develop their own digital libraries.

In this conference, we will concentrate on the Digital Libraries
Initiative at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, but we also
have a number of speakers who will be providing a wider perspective in
order to put the concrete findings in a broader context.

This includes:
* What worked
* Unexpected problems encountered and predictions for future problems
* Things that failed and how to avoid them in the future
* How problems were resolved: Useful solutions and techniques for
      addressing the problems

The workshop will consider some of the following issues, as well as others
contributed by people attending:
* Practical aspects of digital library design
* Managing the development process
* Interacting with stake holders
* Lessons learned from existing projects
* Successes to build on and failures to avoid
* Integrating digital libraries with physical libraries
* Attending to the needs of the user
* Interfaces and the retrieval process

Who should attend? -- Researchers in the field of Digital Libraries and
related disciplines: Library Science, Information Science, Computer
Science, User Interface Design, Digital Library Planners (librarians
considering the options of how to implement a digital library or whether
to have a digital library at all), Librarians interested in the direction
of future libraries (professional development). Systems developers and
professional librarians.

Visit http://edfu.lis.uiuc.edu/dpc98/ for more information on the
conference and registration.
