"National Libraries in the XXI Century - From Information to Knowledge"

Theme/Objectives
This International Debate will offer an opportunity to engage in the reflection that is required of us by the challenges which will shortly be facing national libraries in their role as guarantors of the preservation of our national bibliographic heritages, both within the ambit of their own field of action and in terms of their interaction and relations with other libraries, the scientific and cultural community and other heritage-related institutions such as archives and museums.
Participants
Each Member State of the European Union is invited to take part by sending two representatives from the highest level of the national library sector - in other words directors (or assistant directors) of their national libraries and/or persons who are responsible for policy measures, strategic guidelines and the funding of libraries as a whole, including national libraries.
The Debate is open to librarians and information technology specialists, as well as to Portuguese and foreign archivists and museologists. Similarly, we shall be seeking to motivate the participation of members of the section of the scientific community (university staff, investors, etc.) that is directly interested or involved in the services provided by national libraries.
