Subject: Internet columns

This is most of the text of a page I have posted at
http://library.uraic.ru/~neubert/seeir.htm

I am looking for folks to write "Internet columns" for SEEIR. Read more
below. Thanks, MN

Internet Columns for Slavic & East European Information Resources (SEEIR)

Introduction

SEEIR is a peer-reviewed journal published by the Haworth Press, Inc. -
for full information about the publication, please refer to SEEIR's
homepage (at http://www.pitt.edu/~rondest/SEEIR/). SEEIR will be published
three times a year, but the middle issue will be a "thematic" issue
devoted to a narrower topic (the first thematic issue, volume 1, number
2/3, will cover publishing in the former Yugoslavia).

"Internet columns" will be published generally in the first and third
issues every year. Internet columns in SEEIR are shorter pieces that are
not refereed, and according to information posted by the publisher, the
columns discuss "Internet content and practice" (relevant to the countries
of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, naturally). Some may have
the idea that a "column" is something that you would write on a repeated
basis. That is not the kind of column that is meant here - what is being
referred to is the distinction between longer pieces that will be reviewed
by peers ("articles") and shorter pieces that won't be ("columns").

I have agreed to edit these "Internet columns" (much as June Farris edits
the book reviews for SEEIR ). Thus this page provides additional
information for potential authors of such shorter pieces (beyond what can
be found on the SEEIR homepage).

What subjects are suitable for SEEIR Internet columns?

First, let's look at the list of topics that have been covered or are in
the works:

    - Analysis of the usefulness of Russian web sites (free web sites)
    - The online database ABSEES
    - A Polish-American archival web site
    - Online news sources for Russian (fee-based)
    - REESweb
    - Slavic news media on the Internet (free web sites)
    - Overview of "gateway" Hungarian web sites

Note - a couple of these topics were actually the subject of articles
(peer-reviewed) - it is entirely possibly that you may have a piece
related to the Internet that by virtue of its length and scope is more
suitable for consideration as an "article" rather than a "column." Please
refer to the guidelines available from the SEEIR home page. Also, if I
think that what you submit seems more appropriate for peer review, I will
work to get it "upgraded" (assuming that there is time - articles for peer
review must be submitted earlier).

Thus to return to the question of what subjects are suitable. Here are
some of my suggestions for types of columns that would seem suitable
(further ideas beyond what has been done so far):

     - Analysis/review/comparison of particular web site or web sites (if
sites, then presumably limited by region/country and/or by type)
     - Annotated lists of links related to some describable subset of
Slavic and Eastern European studies (see for example the article by
Natasha Lyandres and Deborah Stanley on Russian studies in College &
Research Library News (http://www.ala.org/acrl/resjan00.html)
     - May look at fee-based resources or may look at free sites or both
     - Construction or maintenance of a particular web site
     - Strategies for locating information of particular types or on
particular subjects
     - Comparison of resource(s) available through the Internet to a print
or CD-ROM based resource

These are not intended to represent the full range of possibilities, but
rather a selection of ideas. Feel free to send me email with any other
ideas for a column that you might have and we can discuss it.

Deadlines

The next issue for which articles are being solicited is volume 2, number
1. I would very much like to recieve ideas for columns as soon as
possible and have completed columns (to me) before June 1. Keep in mind
that after this issue, the next issue will be a "thematic" issue that will
not include Internet columns. In other words, if you have some
inspiration to write something in this area and don't do it now, you won't
have another chance for quite a while (in the world of the Internet, by
the time you get another chance, the information may have completely
changed!).
