Call for Papers / Call for Action
Frauen*FrühlingsUniversität2013 (FFU 2013) (English: Women*SpringUniversity 2013)
From the 18th till the 21st of April 2013 in Burgenland (at the European Peace University
Schlaining)
Feminism United!
Based on the ideas of a Women*Universities, which proceed since the 1970s in Austria and
are therefore looking back on a long tradition, we are happy to announce that the FFU 2013
is taking place in Burgenland.
Women*Only-Space – finally also in Burgenland
Women*Universities, as they are known in Austria, are meant to establish open spaces
exclusively for females*. Hence, they are creating a sphere to interchange, to discuss, to
network and to be politically active. The idea for Women*Spring/SummerUniversities dates
back onto the project of independent women*organisations and individual Feminists, who
tried to burst the male dominated universities. Questions and issues of women*, women*’s
rights, gender, sexuality etc. should therefore be put into the centre of attention and the
centre of science. Female* and transgender scientists should have the possibility to show
their gender-related research and have the ability to present it.
Until now Women*Spring/SummerUniversities have exclusively taken place in university
towns (Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Klagenfurt). Till this day the federal state of Burgenland
has never been a venue. We - as the organising team for the year 2013 - want to establish
this women*only-space in the youngest federal state of Austria and therefore ventured the
step to conduct the FFU 2013.The issue of women*, lesbians, bisexuals, inter- and
transgender people should finally take the centre stage within Burgenland too.
Thus, all women*, lesbians, bisexuals, inter- and transgender people of all ages, all
educational, social and geographical backgrounds, all nativity and sexual orientation are
cordially invited to participate and partake in the Women*SpringUniversity 2013! The
Women*Spring/SummerUniversities are an open space for all interested females*. It should
be possible to exchange experiences, network and educate yourself beyond the ordinary
routine. Socio-political and gender-related questions can only be found and established
within a collective. Hence the FFU 2013 follows the approach to enable an exchange of
different realities, experiences, and concerns as much as possible within this given open and
secure spaces of the Women*SpringUniversity. Within the framework of this event a critical
debate and contention with existing hegemonic structures should occur.
All women* who want to contribute to the improvement of the political, cultural and social
life of females* are welcome at the FFU 2013 - independently from any societal attribution,
independently from their occupational status, with or without caring work and with or
without disabilities. All women* are invited to present their research, ideas and projects and
debate them within this unique space offered. But this women*-only-sphere can also be
used to develop and refine any given projects. It will allow for the identification of current
inequalities and evolve strategies to overcome these. But beside all this exchange, discussion
and engagement, it also gives women* space to revel, dance, eat and enjoy.
The FFU 2013 depends on women* who are filling this event with life. It offers a space for
individual females* and female* researchers, for groups but also for various initiatives and
organisations. All kinds of gender-related research, ideas, projects and claims have a place at
the FFU 2013 and can be incorporated in manifold forms.
Therefore this call is meant to get through to as many women* as possible. All females* are
invited to submit an idea for a lecture, presentation, discussion, workshop or an artistic
and/or political action. Any form to participate is permitted –even if it is just the plain
participation as a guest on the FFU 2013 itself!
Submission:
Thematic priority 2013
Within the framework of the FFU 2013 in Burgenland we want to deal with the topic
“Feminism United”. Through the cultural diversity within the federal state of Burgenland,
and its situation within several national borders, this thematic focus seems appropriate and
suspenseful. Hence, we are more than looking forward for submissions from women*from
other countries and nationalities!
But not just academic papers are welcome. Besides that, actionist and artistic projects are
given room. Under the motto “Feminism United” we understand not just an exchange and
network on a geographical-cultural level, but also in terms of the importance of nonacademic
gender-related work. We are therefore happy to announce that we are also
accepting papers from non-academic background. The Women*SpringUniversity follows the
entitlement of “consolidation” and through this approach we are hoping to do justice to this.
Thematically we are not setting any limits, so any gender- and women*-related research and
project is appropriate, but there will be a focus on the compatibility with the motto
“Feminism United”. Hence, participants are encouraged to bring their submission in relation
to this.
No concrete themes are given, but all papers are asked to bridge the life situation of
females*, science and politics with the core focus of the FFU 2013 “Feminism United”.
Form of the Submission
The contributions to the FFU 2013 can be submitted in various forms: Starting from a
content-related workshop, a classical lecture, a presentation of research results, a
discussion, art projects, an actions or a poster-presentation. – Any idea has its legitimacy!
Submission-Paper
Interested individuals but also groups are asked to explain the idea and the necessary roomand
material requirements in a short concept, which is needed for the application. We are
looking for a short explanation (approx. one A4-page) of the intended workshop, lecture,
presentation etc. and an outline of the content of it. Please state the timeframe you need
(preferred: 2-3 hours).
Financial Support
As in previous years, the team of 2013 is keen to allocate enough financial means to reward
the workshops, lectures etc. Nevertheless there is no actual guarantee for that, as we are
not aware of the financial support we can obtain over the next months and due to budget
limitation. However, we are hoping to be able to support eventual travel, overnight stay and
material costs of our speakers.
Submission to …
Please send your ideas by no later than 31st January 2013 per email to the following address:
ffu2013 at gmail.com
Subsequently all submissions are going to be assessed and the most appropriate ones are
going to be selected to be invited to present their concepts on the FFU 2013. You are going
to be informed about the outcome per email as soon as the decision making process is
finished.
We are looking forward to your papers!
