First CFP for a second Queer and Politics symposium
Queer Questions to Representational Politics
in Berlin, 11.-12.5.2007
The Politics of Philosophy and Gender (PPhiG) Research team and its
leader Tuija Pulkkinen, together with Tuula Juvonen, both within the
Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence in Political Thought and
Conceptual Change at the University of Jyväskylä, invite papers to be
presented at Queer Questions to Representational Politics symposium,
organized in Berlin, on May 11th and 12th 2007.
Queer Questions to Representational Politics is a follow-up symposium
for Challenging the Heteronormativity of Representational Politics,
held in Jyväskylä in May 2006. It continues the discussions and
elaborates on the themes of the first symposium, focussing on
representational politics, and its strained encounters with the queer.
The symposium is structured around two larger topics: Queers in
Politics, dealing with the possibilities of queer participation in
representational politics, and Queer Politics, asking questions about
the queer modes of representation in politics. In this context
representational politics means political actors struggling to get
elected as representatives of political parties and to organize
parties; whether in national or local contexts. Putting together
"representative" and "representational politics" and "the queer" in
this manner is a true challenge, and, for at least some of us, a
contradiction in terms.
The symposium invites papers which consider queer as a challenge to
the normative order of sexuality and gender within the
representational politics, whether in terms of studies on lesbian, gay
and transgendered politicians, or topics, or particular political
episodes. More than generalizing statements of the queer and the
politics, we are interested in the topic as radically historical
phenomena, located in both time and place. The normative orders
constraining queer representatives, no doubt, also intertwine with
class, ethnicity and religion, as well as with the diverse
representational systems and political cultures in various countries.
We also invite papers which ask detailed questions about the
conditions and limitations representational politics poses to
representing queerness. These include, but are not limited to, the
minoritizing logic of (in)tolerance, or the (im)possibility of
representing queer interests and acting in queer manner in
parliamentary frameworks. Also, detailing the diverse processes of
representational gate keeping might be of interest here: media making
and breaking political careers, or established power structures and
procedures within political parties producing credible candidates.
Yet, it is also good to keep the bigger questions in mind: what is the
contemporary condition that invokes the interest in the queer and
representational politics?
The two-day-symposium will consist of sessions of papers and
commentaries, and selected papers will be published as a collection of
articles edited by Tuula Juvonen and Tuija Pulkkinen.
Invited speaders include: Laure Bereni (France), Antke Engel
(Germany), Anu Koivunen and Tiina Rosenberg (Sweden), along with Tuula
Juvonen and Tuija Pulkkinen (Finland).
Abstracts of max. 250 words should be sent to Tuula Juvonen
