Deborah Hertz is the Herman Wouk Chair in Modern Jewish Studies at the
University of California at San Diego. She is the author of Jewish High
Society in Old Regime Berlin, first published in an English hardback volume
by Yale University Press in 1988, translated into German and currently in
press with the Philo Verlag, and has now has appeared in an English
paperback edition with Syracuse University Press. She is the editor of a
volume of Rahel Varnhagen's letters:  Briefe an eine Freundin:  Rahel
Varnhagen an Rebecca Friedländer (Cologne:  Kiepenheuer und Witsch, 1988).

 

Her new book is How Jews Became Germans, in press with Yale University
Press, forthcoming in March of 2007. She is at work on a book entitled The
Magic Circle of Race in Germany and Israel, a collective biography of German
Zionists which compares Jewish and German nationalism in the twentieth
century.

 

Her articles and reviews have appeared in The New German Critique, the
American Historical Review, the Journal of Modern History, and Tikkun
Magazine.

 

She has previously held visiting appointments or been on the faculty of the
State University of New York at Binghamton,  Sarah Lawrence College, Tel
Aviv University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the University of
Haifa, and Tel Aviv University.
