ver the past two decades, Mama Cash, the first independent
funding organisation for women, has granted some € 20 million in
support of over 5,000 women?s groups and their self-initiated
projects.
The foundation strives for a peaceful and just world where women
are free to make their own choices and to develop their talents
and skills. Mama Cash is set apart from other grant making
organisations by their support for women's groups that blaze the
trails with self-initiated projects, as well as new and smaller
women's groups.
The organisation focuses its support on physical integrity, art,
culture and media, economic justice, peace and security,
empowerment and participation. Its support has included the
implementation of a rape crisis centre in Bulgaria, an abortion
clinic on a boat in international waters outside repressive
countries to offer reproductive choice to women, and the use of
art to tell the stories of abused women prisoners.
It has also supported action for women workers in Korea, the
first feminist reading of the Koran, and the fight against
sterilisation in Slovakia. CIVICUS received support for women?s
participation in the 2004 World Assembly in Gaborone, Botswana.
In 1998, Mama Cash began its ongoing support to develop
independent women's funds in the Global South, Central and
Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union. Today, there are 15
such funds worldwide through which increasing levels of
expertise is being mobilised to canvas local funds for women's
groups.
Thanks to the work of the Foundation, women are now no longer
solely dependant on financial support from the North and can
make independent decisions regarding financial resources in
their own countries. For further details, see
