The Fund is both a grantmaker and an initiator of programs,
engaging in a range of activities to equip women?s human rights
activists with the resources necessary to respond to emerging
conflict or crisis.

The Fund provides small grants to enable activists to take
advantage of unanticipated opportunities to advance or protect
women?s human rights. Work in this area also includes:

Global Outreach ? establishing contact with women in areas of
armed conflict or escalating violence through a network of
advisors and supporters and through the distribution of written
materials and online information;

Protection ? providing protection for women?s human rights
defenders by giving financial support, providing information
about how to prepare for an evacuation, or organizing a support
team to enable an activist to move to a safer location.

The Urgent Action Fund looks first at the situation that has
arisen and then at the intervention that is planned in response.
Activities supported by the Urgent Action Fund vary widely,
although the overall goal remains the advancement of women?s
human rights.

The Urgent Action Fund makes small grants anywhere in the world
intended to enable a short-term intervention in the course of a
long-term strategy. They attempt to respond to most urgent
requests within 72 hours.

The Urgent Action Fund is not able to make grants for
humanitarian efforts, general program activities, or individual
participation in conferences.

There are no deadlines.
