EUROPE WITHOUT HOMOPHOBIA: QUEER-IN(G) COMMUNITIES
WROCLAW, Poland
24-26 May, 2004
The 5th international queer and gender studies conference organized
in Poland since 2000 will concern the largely silent presence of
queer people in the communities of Europe, from the local to the
international level. We want to consider how the European accession
of ten new member states in May 2004 will alter the lives of queer
people in Central/Eastern Europe, and how we can contribute to making
sexual minorities in the European Community visible, heard, safe, and
equal before the law. We hope to investigate the practical ways
(including legal actions, information campaigns, political
participation, etc.) of achieving the bold vision suggested in the
title: Europe without homophobia. We plan to focus on the following
areas:
* Ethics of change
* Legal solutions to queer peoples' problems
* Queer peoples' history
* Queer perspectives on film, art, literature, and popular culture
* Non-homophobic education
* Queer interventions in psychology and sexology
* Queer theory and activism: does activism work without theory?
* Queering academia
* Ideologies of politeness and the strategies of effrontery
The deadline for paper proposals is February 27, 2004. Please send
300-word abstracts in Polish or English by e-mail or snail mail to:
A bilingual selection of papers from previous conferences, A Queer
Mixture: Gender Perspectives on Minority Sexual Identites, was
published in 2002 by Wydawnictwo Slask." For more details on the
