Cooperation and Autonomy in Language Teaching and Learning,
A SEAL Hungary Seminar, Budapest, 6-9 June, 2003

British and American trainers offer their innovative teaching methods to
develop cooperation and learner autonomy by engaging the whole person of the
student in the learning experience. Each trainer gives a plenary talk and an
in-depth one-day workshop to experience and discuss classroom activities.
The overall aim of the seminar is to promote genuine inquiry, share
information and to inspire each other in our personal and professional
growth. This may be a wonderful opportunity for teachers committed to
fostering the unfolding of human potential in education to meet and share
their views, experiences, concerns and hopes about our changing profession.

Our presenters are Robert Gillan (UK) on Team-building; Liv Monroe (US) on
Non-violent communication, Mario Rinvolucri (UK) on Humanizing language
learning; Bonnie Tsai (USA, France) on The metaphoric mind; Adrian Underhill
(UK) on Life-affirming leadership; and Jim Wingate (UK) on Coping with
difficulties in the learning process. Andrew Wright (UK) will give an
evening workshop on the role of storytelling and arts in learning.

Seminar programme

Robert Gillan (UK)

Building Teams

Until recently, it was quite normal for us to belong naturally to a number
of long-term and fixed communities. For most of us, those communities no
longer exist. We need to re-learn how best to fit into a team, how best to
contribute, how best to relate to the other members of the teams. Robert
will show the roles which we fulfil most naturally, so that we can give of
our best and relate better to the others in our teams.

Liv Monroe (US)

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) in Schools

NVC, the language of compassion, promotes connection, mutual respect and
co-operation without permissiveness or authoritarianism. This talk and
workshop will give participants specific strategies to address the
interpersonal challenges of teaching (student to student; teacher to
student, parent, administrator and other staff) as well as teachers'
internal challenges and the societal challenges of school reform.

Mario Rinvolucri (UK)

The Happy Convergence of Corpus Linguists and Language Teachers
The last 25 years have seen a gradual revolution in our understanding of how
English works. We have a leading group of academics who now describe the
grammar of oral English by focusing on the relationship between the
speakers. The workshop will offer practical classroom exercises and a vision
of the grammar of English that is possibly richer and more complete than
what you learnt at university.

 Bonnie Tsai (US, France)

The Metaphoric Mind
When using metaphor, the teacher communicates with the students'
sub-conscious, and this is the most effective means of passing information
along to others. Working with metaphors can be done through stories, poems,
creative writing, or even objects. Teachers will experience these activities
as well as the means to use them in the classroom. We shall also explore
metaphor as a means to clarifying and understanding different learning
styles.

Adrian Underhill (UK)

Developing the Qualities of Life-Affirming Leadership

This talk will discuss a new paradigm which challenges male-based leadership
characterised by speed, efficiency and growth. We look at how life-affirming
leadership can operate at every level within a school. In the workshop -
using Howard Gardner's observation that successful leaders have a clear
central message or story - we will explore our own individual stories that
we, consciously or unconsciously, tell those we work with and those we
teach.

Jim Wingate (UK)

Coping with Difficulties in the Learning Process

This talk and workshop shares solutions for difficult classes, difficult
behaviour, difficulties in learning, difficult ages and stages, and conflict
situations. The solutions come from various sources, e.g. non-violence,
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), animal behaviour, and brain research.
They all make group work happen more successfully in mixed levels and mixed
abilities.

To encourage the in-depth exploration and active integration of ideas and
materials, each trainer gives a whole-day workshop. Each workshop is offered
twice, and participants are asked to sign up for two different workshops

What is SEAL?

SEAL is a networking organisation of people united by a passion for learning
about how the mind works, and how best to help all learners achieve their
full potential to live happy, healthy and fulfilled lives. SEAL supports all
learning approaches, which are effective (they work) and affective - they
engage the whole person, including emotions.

SEAL was founded in 1983 by Michael Lawlor and Peter O'Connell to promote
the revolutionary work on Suggestopaedia by the Bulgarian educator, Dr
Georgi Lozanov. Today SEAL embraces all approaches to holistic learning,
incorporating mind, body, emotions and spirit.

SEAL has active branches in several countries and has reciprocal member
benefits with similar organisations: e.g. IAL (USA), DGSL (Germany), NEAL
(The Netherlands), NIEALIO (Belgium), SOHL (Sweden).

SEAL-Hungary is a non-profit, non-sectarian educational foundation
registered in Budapest in 1995.
