Protest Rape and Attitudes That Excuse Sexual Assault
Wear Jeans . . .Participate and Protest
Talk About It . . . Challenge Harmful Attitudes
Change It . . . Join together to make our community safer from Sexual
Assault
On Wednesday, April 25th, women and men will wear jeans to protest
rape and harmful attitudes that allow rape and sexual assault to persist, and
allow victim/survivors to be re-victimized.
Harmful Attitudes and Excuses: she asked for it -- she wore a short
dress -- she dated him before -- she was in his room at 2am -- you know that
7-year olds lie -- she was a lesbian -- she dated lots of men -- she liked to
go to bars -- she was dancing sexy -- she wore sexy clothes -- she was his wife -- he was a prostitute
Sponsored annually by the Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against
Women (LACAAW), more than 5,000 LA County residents participated in Denim
Day last year. Participants use Denim Day to promote conversation about persistent attitudes that allow rapists to go free and adversely affect victim healing by:
-- Wearing jeans (even against dress code),
-- Officially declaring April 25th Denim Day in their community,
-- Wearing Denim Day in L.A. buttons or temporary tattoos,
-- Posting Denim Day flyers and prevention education materials in their workplace, classroom or home, and
-- Hosting sexual assault prevention discussions with co-workers, colleagues, members, family, friends, and just about everyone.
Background:
Denim Day began in 1999 as part of international protest following an
Italian Supreme Court's decision to overturn a rape conviction because the
victim wore jeans. The justices stated in their decision that, "it is common
knowledge . . . that jeans cannot even be partly removed without the
effective help of the person wearing them . . . and it is impossible
if the victim is struggling with all her might."
