Unequal at any age
Millions of young women in Britain and the EU believe the fight for equality
was won by the older generation - in politics and the public sphere, in the
workplace, in the domestic sphere, in health, in education.
A new report gives a different picture.
The European Women's Lobby has just issued a readable 20-page report titled
Young Women's Guide To Equality Between Women And Men In Europe.
Here are some of the findings:
Only 24% of Members of European Governments are women. This varies from 5%
in Greece to 18% in the UK, to around 50% in Sweden
Men occupy 87% of key positions in the Media industry. Women only represent
29% of journalists/editors in the written Press in Western Europe. When
asked, young women say the Media's power 'is often used against women: the
Media exploits the image of women as sex objects at every turn, thereby
helping to reinforce damaging stereotypes.' Young women were found to agree
unanimously that 'this partial, sexualised and often degrading image ... is
an important element in maintaining discrimination against women.'
A woman was appointed judge in the European Court of Justice for the first
time in 1999, although the Court was established 50 years ago, in 1952
Women still perform 80% of household tasks (except in Nordic countries).
Significantly because of this, 83% of part-time workers in the EU are women
In the EU as a whole, women doing the same work as a man are paid only 76%
of the man's hourly wage
Only 4% of university chairs are occupied by women in Austria (10% in Italy,
13% in France)
Osteoporosis which affects one-third of women over 50 was officially
recognised by the WHO only 7 years ago (1994)
Women are twice as likely to suffer from depression as men, tragically often
in their longer old age
98% of victims of domestic violence are women. In one EU country
(Netherlands) domestic violence is estimated to cost the State over Sterling
£100 million
Copies of the report can be obtained from the European Women's Lobby (EWL).
