Trafficking and Slavery

Dear GREAT networkers

We are planning the March 2002 issue of 'Gender and Development', the
international journal for development practitioners, policy-makers,
researchers and feminist activists, published by Oxfam GB. I would greatly
appreciate your help in identifying possible individuals and organisations
who could contribute to this issue.

Full guidelines for contributors are attached to the end of this message,
but please note that 'Gender and Development' aims to improve development
policy and practice through offering a forum for exchange of experience and
learning, and we prioritise sharing the experience of development and
feminist workers and activists. However, we do also welcome articles from
academic researchers (many of whom are of course also involved in policy),
offering insights of direct relevance to policy and practice.

Articles should be no longer than 4,000 words, and written in an accessible
style which will enable them to be of use to all in our readership. The
deadline for this issue is 31 October, but all articles need to be
discussed with the editor and confirmed now.

The articles we are currently looking for are as follows, although
proposals for other variations on the theme are welcome.

GaD 11:1, Trafficking and slavery

1. Overview article discussing and defining the basic concepts, and
stating why this is a hot issue now, in relation to  globalisation. Focus
on a) the breakdown of borders, state jurisdiction, and b) the issue of
increasing numbers of women and girls (also men and boys) being coerced
into bonded, exploitative work due to economic insecurity and desperation.

2. Article on national and international laws and their inadequacy in
protecting bonded workers; calling for action to challenge and change the
legal response and ensure bonded workers are able to use the law.

3. What should be the response from development organisations? examples of
best practice in strengthening livelihoods of people who need an
alternative to bonded work.

Group of articles focusing on particular facets of the topic:

4. Slavery of girl children, taking a holistic and challenging approach
which does not only focus on slavery and bonded labour but looks at the
similarities of these with the practice of 'early marriage' and forced
marriage. Use framework of the Rights of the Child and the activities of
organisations working to counter such practices

5. Slavery of boys and girls to hard labour or to craft activities under
globalised system; responses from companies involved in North

6.  'Mail-order brides' to Northern countries - what is the practice, how
it is conceptualised in a racialised/sexualised way by the Northern media,
what are the responses of organisations working to support women for whom
the experience goes sour

7. HIV/AIDS and the link to coerced sex work - the demonisation of sex
workers in spreading HIV, and the silence surrounding the issue in
countries which send and receive sex workers - responses from organisations

8. Migrant domestic workers fighting back against sexual and other abuse,
and lack of support from the state in sending and receiving countries
