Subject: News of the World March of Women
To World March of Women participating groups who, according to our
information, do not have a national coordinating body for the World March
Hello,
We are pleased to be writing you again to share with you new developments in
connection with the World March of Women. As you know, the March in the year
2000 was an opportunity for establishing closer ties among women the world
over, for speaking with one voice, and for undertaking a collective analysis
and action to lead us to more and more concrete victories for justice,
equality and peace. We have now reached the stage of consolidating the
movement created by the March.
At the national level we know that a large number of coordinating bodies set
up for the March continue to be active and are working, in the name of the
March, to eliminate poverty and violence against women.
At the international level, the next step in the World March of Women is to
hold the 3rd international meeting, scheduled for October of this year in
Montréal, Québec, Canada. The objectives of this meeting are as follows:
- Complete the global political evaluation of the World March of Women in
the Year 2000;
- Consolidate the work that was begun in the context of the World March of
Women;
- Decide on our goals and a plan for future actions;
- Discuss our world platform and our analysis based on current issues;
- Adopt a development plan (structure and funding).
Each national coordinating body is entitled to send two representative to
the international meeting. According to the information we have, there is no
national coordinating body for the World March in your country, but it is
not too late to set one up. We suggest that women wanting to create such a
body organize a meeting with the participating groups registered with the
March (see the list on the March’s Web site), or they can invite other
groups to join the March. The goal is to form a broad coalition in every
country to represent as much as possible the diversity present in the women’
s movement. One reason to set up a national coordinating body is to be able
to discuss and name a representative of the World March of Women in your
country to attend the international meeting to be held this October. If you
do organize a meeting to found a World March coordinating body, please let
me know at the following address: nancyb at ffq.qc.ca. Then I will send you the
preparatory documents and give you any assistance you may need. Please note
that, unfortunately, we cannot pay for any travel, accommodations or per
diems for the international meeting. As in the case of other March
activities, each coordinating body is asked to do its own fund-raising.
We hope you all received the newsletter that we sent out by regular mail in
February. In it we reported on the success of the World March by discussing
many national actions; the world actions on October 17, 2000; the political
meetings with the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the UN;
the signature campaign; media coverage of the March; etc. If you did not
receive the newsletter, you will find it on our Web site:
http://www.ffq.qc.ca/marche2000. The Web site also contains all the basic
information about the March and a section on the actions staged last October
(photos, interviews, etc.). We encourage you to keep up to date on news
about the World March of Women by visiting our Web site.
In feminist solidarity,
Nancy Burrows, International Liaison
